Volunteers help food efforts expand on coast
Leslie Robertson had volunteered with ALAS in the past, but it was the CZU fire in mid-August that prompted her latest effort. In recent weeks, Robertson gathered donations and coordinated with the local Safeway to purchase 200 bags worth of Thanksgiving ingredients, including chickens, potatoes and sparkling cider.

ALAS has new home downtown
The pastel yellow house with the pink doors at 636 Purissima St. in Half Moon Bay stands out for its unique look as well as its use. The building is the new home to the nonprofit Ayudando Latinos A Soñar. And it was given to ALAS as a gift: free and a complete surprise.

Storytelling in Half Moon Bay
A simple conversation among USF faculty about concerns for the anti-immigrant rhetoric in the United States birthed a new opportunity to counter: storytelling through a community theater, located in Half Moon Bay, where, according to the Bay Area census, nearly one third of the population is Latino or of Hispanic heritage.

Nonprofits promote literacy this summer
The COVID-19 pandemic leaves educators worried that kids are falling behind, especially in key areas like literacy. Nonprofits on the Coastside are trying to help close that gap. One, Ayudando Latinos a Soñar, has partnered with University of San Francisco education professor Jane Bleasdale to visit four local farms per week.

ALAS van gets a splash of color
On a blustery Wednesday afternoon in Half Moon Bay, Steven Nuñez Camacho worked diligently behind the cover of a white van owned by Ayudando Latinos a Soñar. After nearly eight hours of work the day before, Camacho continued to decorate the vehicle by painting and spraying a mix of vivid yellow, purple and turquoise colors.

Three prominent Coastside nonprofits are banding together to create a “Coastside Crisis Fund” in the wake of a global pandemic that has changed nearly all aspects of life on the San Mateo County coast.

ALAS expands mental health services
Local nonprofit Ayudando Latinos a Soñar has been a staple in the community for about nine years offering a variety of cultural arts programs. Now, after receiving a grant from the Sand Hill Foundation, the organization is expanding, a with new office dedicated for providing space for mental health services.
