Marisela Martinez
Program Administrative Assistant
Hello, I am Marisela Martinez-Maya. I am the Program Administrative Assistant as part of the Administration Team here at ALAS. I was born and raised in Half Moon Bay a few years after my parents migrated to Half Moon Bay from Oaxaca, Mexico. I have since graduated from Half Moon Bay High School and am a First Generation College Student attending the College of San Mateo. I was originally a Sociology Major planning to be a Social Worker following the steps and under the inspiration of Dr. Belinda Hernandez-Arriaga but have since switched majors and am now pursuing my Associates Degree for Transfer in Mathematics as a Statistics Major.
I was a very shy and reserved teenager growing up but started to open up to new opportunities including sports and the Leadership classes both at Cunha Intermediate School and Half Moon Bay High School. I became very interactive both at school and with extracurricular activities, amongst them school clubs, volunteering, and was part of Mariachi Media Luna. Towards the end of my Junior year in high school, I decided to volunteer as an Assistant Coach with the Half Moon Bay Girls Softball League helping young girls in our community learn the sport I love. During my sophomore year at the College of San Mateo, I was presented with the opportunity to be a Math/ Statistics Tutor at the Math Resource Center on campus. Helping my classmates and other college students learn my favorite subject made me realize that I want to pursue a career in which I could continue to do what I love, both Math and engaging with others through my work.
In 2012, during 7th Grade of Middle School, I joined Mariachi Media Luna, the Youth Mariachi Group in Half Moon Bay which is part of the ALAS Performing Arts Program. As such, I was introduced to ALAS and my journey with ALAS began. I have always loved to volunteer and give back to our beautiful community, creating many great relationships and opportunities to grow as a person and to shape my career path.
